Indian Musical Instruments have a long history & there are wide variety of musical instruments. Music was not only among the amusements but was part of religious ceremonies & rituals. There were professional musicians in India for last 6000 years & a great variety of musical instruments invented & developed in the Indian subcontinent. Contacts with different countries also gave emergence to the various new instruments. The Indian word for music is Sangita, which means a chorus or a sing by many voices, and also applies to singing accompanied by playing of instruments and dancing. In its vast compass, therefore, Indian music includes music in all its forms, vocal, instrumental, choral, together with the allied arts of dancing and gesticulating. As in all other advanced countries so in India, music is considered to be a fine art. As such it may be defined as an art which employs sounds (Not necessarily words) combined so as to be agreeable to the ear, as a medium of expressing one's emotions and perceptions, and of creating in the hearers the emotions and perceptions desired by the artist.

 

Most musical instruments have a string, a reed (Thin piece of wood or metal), or some other device that creates sound waves when set in motion. Musical Instruments can be grouped in five major classes. These classes are as below,
